guitars

  • Dejawu Guitars is a cooperation between two friends and guitar builders who share their skills and knowledge. The woodwork, painting, lacquering, polishing and fretting is done by Dongming in China. The design, setup of hardware and electronics (machine heads, wiring, bridges, pickups, potentiometers, switches) quality control, promotion and sales is done by Derk Jan in The Netherlands.

For a detailed description of how we build our guitars, please visit: Building Process.

  • Are you interested in buying a custom handmade guitar by Dejawu, please feel free to contact us. Our showroom in The Netherlands is always open (on appointment). Furthermore, you can see, hear and try our guitars on several guitar shows across Europe. Check out Our Planned Events on the bottom of the page to find our when and where! (or follow us on social media)

Also, we have one model available at Alligator Amps in downtown Montreux, Switzerland. visit https://en.alligator-amps.ch/product-page/dejawu-t-ultimate for more info!

  • The construction of our semi-acoustic guitars, all of which are equipped with a square center block at the bridge position, eliminates all possible feedback problems entirely while maintaining its acoustic properties. The center of the top maintains its original thickness, while the rest of the wood is carefully carved away by hand. In this way, there is considerably less tension on the top compared to a laminated top. Hand carving the top thus eliminates the need for a center block that covers the entire body length of the guitar needed for stability and to avoid feedback.

  • Comparing guitars is a very personal matter. Each brand has its own history, image, feel and sound. Even the same guitar of the same brand, built on the same day can be very different to the one that was made before or after it. Our guitars have familiar shapes and sounds, so you will definitely feel at home with our models. Our own personal history, touch, craft and love for our guitars make our guitars special and worth a try. It is up to you how you can compare it to other guitars! Please let us know what you think.

  • Fully assembled, guitars in the T-Ultimate Series weigh about 2.7 kg. Guitars in the E-Special Series weigh about 3.1 kg. Depending on the wood type, body side, hardware, it might vary slightly among the different models in one series.

  • Dejawu is a combination of the names of the two founders, Derk Jan and Wu Dongming.

  • Yes, all our guitars come with a case or (leather) bag. For the models we already have in stock, please check currently available to check guitar specific details on what case comes with the guitar.

  • The serials numbers are placed inside of the body of the guitars. You can see it when you look through the sound hole toward the neck. If it is difficult to see, a small flashlight may come in handy. ID numbers are assigned when a build is completed.

  • By locating the ID number first. The ID numbers of our guitars consist of 3-4 letters and 4 digits. (model - build year – build month – color specification) Example: TU2006LS  Model: T-Ultimate, Build Year: ‘20, Month completed: June, Color spec: LS = Light Sunburst

  • We are more than happy to help you explore what works best for you. We have different models in stock for you to try so you can get an idea of what you like or don’t like. Please contact us for a personal appointment.

  • All of our instruments are hand crafted from scratch. The total time it will take for new orders to be delivered can vary depending on the model, custom options you choose, availability of materials, shipping etc. Expect the whole process to take up to 5-6 months. All orders are fulfilled in the order in which they were received by us.

  • The wood we currently use for the bodies include mahogany, maple and spruce. For the necks we use either maple or mahogany and or the fingerboards we use ebony.

If you want, you can provide your own wood for a custom Dejawu guitar. Please be aware that not all wood types are suitable for guitar building. Please make sure to consult us in advance and we'll be happy to think along. Also good to know, shipping costs will be for your own account. Also, keep in mind that some woods may take longer to order or are more expensive than others.

  • Of course, you can! Choosing your own color is entirely up to you. Having that said, besides guitar builders, we are also great wood lovers. All our woods are carefully selected for their acoustic qualities but also for their beautiful figuring which is unique to every piece of wood. For this figuring to remain visible, we prefer to make use of transparent paints.

  • You are free to send us the specifications of what you want, and we will build it for you. Please take in mind that we handcraft all our necks. Its not standardized factory work. Therefore, it is impossible to guarantee exact thicknesses and shapes for 100%. However, we can get reasonably close.

  • No problem. Just drop us a message!

  • Inlays are no standard feature on our guitars. Instead, little dots on the side of the neck help you orientate. However, we offer custom inlays at an additional price. In that case we kindly ask you to send us: 1) your design; 2) The material of your choice (abalone, mother of pearl, acrylic, etc.); 3) Preferred color (black, white, etc.)

  • We offer various scale lengths. You should choose your scale length based on the string tension you prefer. To get an A440 the tension is higher on a 25.5" scale compared to a 24.75" scale.

MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

  • Wood is directly affected by humidity and temperature; it takes on and gives off water and therefore expands and shrinks. Extreme or sudden changes in air humidity or temperature are your guitars biggest enemy! This can cause great damage to your instrument and should be avoided at all times!! Please read our Maintenance & Care page for more information.

  • Signs of a guitar that is too humid are: high action, swollen top/warped back and sides, fret buzzing in the high registers, muffled tone, low volume, possible cracks in the lacquer finishing, separating bindings or weakened joints with water-based glues.

Signs of a guitar that is too dry are: low action, fret buzzing and lifting, sharp fret ends, dips in the top or back, lacquer checking or even wood cracks. When you live in a dry climate, you can consider purchasing a guitar humidifier. These should be handled with great care.

  • Beware that the chemicals in rubber used in many guitar stands (and clip-on tuners!) react with the nitrocellulose lacquer of our guitars. In some cases, this causes a slight discoloration, but in other cases it dissolves the lacquer entirely. We recommend using a guitar polish cloth to cover the rubber when using a stand. We will provide you with these. When you store your guitar for longer periods of time, we advise you to store it in its case or bag.

  • It is important to clean de body, neck but also the strings of your guitar regularly. Wipe off perspiration and fingerprints, as this affects the lacquer, the wood ánd the metal of your guitar. A soft, damp cloth (not wet) cloth will perfectly suffice. Make sure to remove remaining moisture with a clean, dry cloth. You do not need any (commercial) cleaning detergents.

  • Your guitar will arrive completely assembled and set up. However, you will have to tune the guitar and possibly adjust the truss rod. We will provide you with the tools and information you need.

  • If you have a guitar equipped with a signum bridge or a tremolo, you will need an allen wrench and a special Schaller spanner that comes with the guitar.

  • All our guitar necks can be adjusted with a 4mm allen wrench. Please be sure to use the correct wrench to avoid stripping the truss rod nut. Adjusting the truss rod is a very delicate operation, so if you are not experienced in doing this we recommend bringing it to a local guitar shop or repairman.
